Resident Evil: Retribution
The Best Resident Evil so Far
The Resident Evil movie franchise isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and the recent proves that. Alice is back for some Retribution, in the fifth film; where she is going head to heads with former friends and past enemies. This is hands down one of the best films in the series, everything from powerful female characters, jaw-dropping action sequences, amazing fight scenes, a good storyline and mixed together with amazing eye-popping 3D. Now even though the dialogue could have been way better, the acting was solid. One of the best things about the film is that the video game feels it has to it. Why see this film?
The Characters
Alice (Milla Jovovich) is back once again, and this time the character seems more human, like she was portrayed in the first film. Still without her powers, she proves to be a fighting machine while also still showing weakness. This is what fans seem to love about her in this movie, as she just keeps going on pure ambition trying to stop the Umbrella Corporation. Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), has also returned now, she is more alike her video game counterpart; the one seen in Resident Evil 5. Everything from her battle suit to the mind controlling scarab device on her chest and her killer instinct makes one of the greatest villains to ever come on screen and Sienna Guillory brings her to life. Fan favorites from the game also make appearance, Ada Wong (Li Bingbing), Leon S. Kennedy (Johann Urb), and Barry Burton (Kevin Durand). Fans of the game will enjoy them, as it seems they were just yanked from the games. Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) is also back, but what is his true role?
Send in the Clones, past characters from the film have been resurrected such Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodriguez), who has been cloned. There are two of them, the ruthless Umbrella Soilder and the nice anti-guns version. Michelle Rodriguez said the most challenging thing she did in the film was wearing high heels. Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr), has also returned as husband to a cloned Alice, and daughter Becky, while the other is a Umbrella Solider and last but not least James "One" Shade (Colin Salmon), we really don’t see a good clone of him but the Bad one was enough.
Other characters to join Alice, is her friend Luther West (Boris Kodjoe) who survived the attack on the prison. And some people will enjoy the return of the Red Queen (played by Megan Charpentier and voiced by Ave Merson-O’Brian), quoting her famous line from the first film “Your all going to die down here”.
The Action Sequences and Fight Scenes
What the film lacks in dialogue makes up for in the action, the film series are known for its high paced action sequences and fights, this one lives up to its predecessors. The fights scenes are great, especially the one between Alice and Jill Valentine which is another thing fans have wanted to see. Rain also gets her hands dirty as she fights Luther and Leon, 2 against 1 may not be fair but Rain with some from help Umbrella she holds her own.
The Monsters
Zombies, Huge Lickers, Las Plagas, and Axemen all add to the films greatness, each of these monsters give the characters a run for their money. Each of them also seems so real, the zombies are faster and stronger, the Licker gives length to the chase senses. While the Las Plagas on bikes and shooting guns are here for fans enjoy meant. The Axemen I think are the best additions to the film, fighting Alice and Ada was one of the best scenes.
Video Game Presence
Unlike the last few films, this has the most Video Game feel to it and its what fans have been waiting for in the series. The way the film paces itself really makes you feel like you’re watching a video game. The narration by the Red Queen and her sending in BOWs to track down Alice, the BOWs act as Bosses in the film as if you were playing the games. And the various levels the characters must go through to survive, the way the action sequences revolve around it, is what makes it like a real video game brought to the big screen. The last few films may have had better fan reviews if Paul W.S. Anderson had brought in this concept sooner.
Why see the Film?
If you were already a fan of the films you will definitely enjoy it, fans of the game should also check this one out, it does not have everything that want; but it does have that Resident Evil vibe to it. The film may also attract new eyes, if they see the film’s opening where Alice does a recap. But old fans will enjoy seeing the main character Alice being portrayed as more human.
I give Resident Evil: Retribution 8/10
